Whitaker Historical Collection

In the Southold Free Library Local History Room

Consisting of books, diaries, letters, scrapbooks, post cards, photos, yearbooks, and newspaper articles, this invaluable reference preserves the history and people of Southold since its founding in 1640.

This permanent historic collection was dedicated during Southold's 300th anniversary celebration in 1940 and presented to the Library. It is named in honor of Reverend Epher Whitaker, who resided in Southold from 1851-1916. Dr. Whitaker encouraged the townspeople to preserve their rich and unique heritage. He is the author of "History of Southold's First Century".

This non-circulating collection is located on the 2nd level in the original part of the building. Library personnel locate requested materials to be used in-house.
