Learn about how to prepare

We have openings for appointments for free AARP tax prep. There are no income or age restrictions and you do not have to be an AARP member. Sign up today. Appointments are available every Wednesday from February 10 to April 14. Once you make an appointment, a packet will be sent to you with all the information and forms you will need.

Is an appointment required?

YES. Free drop off / pick up tax preparation services provided by AARP Tax Aide volunteers will be available on Wednesdays from February 10 - April 14, 2021 at Southold Free Library. Two appointments are required. (Please contact Southold Library Reference at 631-765-2077.) Appointments are available between 10:10am – 12 noon for dropping off tax documents. Your return will be completed remotely. After your return is completed, you will need to return to the library to pick-up your completed return. Appointments are available between 1pm – 2pm for picking up finalized tax returns.

All necessary safety measures will be in place for everyone's protection. Click here for a checklist of materials you will need to bring with you in order for AARP preparers to work on your return. The AARP Tax Aide volunteers can prepare 2020 tax returns and 2019 tax returns, if needed.

Are there other free tax filing options?

YES. If you are unable to schedule an appointment with the tax preparers at Southold Library, here are some other options for free tax preparation services.

What if I want to file taxes myself?

YES. The IRS and NYS Department of Taxation and Finance have free e-file software that you can use. If you made less than $72,000 in 2020, you can use FreeFile.
