Budget Message to the Library Community

By Southold | News

You have most likely received an absentee ballot from the Southold School District by mail. The ballot includes a proposition for the Library budget, which will cover operations from July 1, 2020-June 30, 2021.

The Library Board of Trustees has voted to propose a budget for the 2020-2021 fiscal year that keeps spending to a 0% increase for the year.

For a breakdown in revenue and spending, click here to access the budget information sheet. For further questions, please contact Director Caroline MacArthur.

The decision to submit a budget with no increase in spending was both a difficult and a simple one to make. We are aware of the economic challenges the community has been facing, and continues to face. In light of this, the proposed budget will not have an economic impact that would make those challenges even greater.

During the Library’s closure this spring, there were opportunities to keep spending down in certain service and maintenance areas. This fund balance will be used moving forward as needed.

Although the Library’s building has been closed, the library has been open for online programs, materials, and services such as reference. We have begun a phased plan to offer curbside and delivery services for books and other materials to be borrowed moving forward.

Please call the library on weekdays (631) 765-2077, utilize the chat service on the webpage  southoldlibrary.org, or email the Director at caroline@southoldlibrary.org with questions on the budget, online library services, or borrowing materials.

I look forward to the day I can greet you at the door, say “Come in”!
